Nonsmoking women who consume more than 300 mg. of caffeine daily reduce their monthly chance of conception by 26 percent. This is a new study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology’s latest issue. Caffeine disrupts the menstrual cycle and leads to early pregnancy loss.
Dr. Neil Stine, cardiologist at Northern University School of Medicine in Chicago, said that heavy coffee drinkers are more likely to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol and lead more sedentary lifestyles.
Caffeine, a psychoactive substance, increase alertness and concentration. It is found in coffee, tea, cola drinks and cocoa.
When transported to the human brain, it blocks other brain chemicals’ functions. It prevents the adenosine from functioning and creates an imbalance in the system.
An hour after intake, blood sugar levels rise. Pulse rate slows down and blood pressure rises by as much as 10 percent because caffeine uses the adrenal glands to release greater amounts of stimulating chemicals into the bloodstream.
Nutrition expert Celia Florencio explains the dimensions in caffeine as follows:
- A cup of medium-strength coffee contains 18 mg. of caffeine per fluid ounce or total of 90 mg.
- A cup of tea of average strength has approximately 60 to 75 mg.
- The average caffeine in a six ounce cola bottle is about 23mg.
- Chocolate has only a trace of caffeine but contains large quantities of another stimulant called theobromine. An average cup of chocolate contains approximately 0.25 gm. of theobromine.
